The method

What spray plastering is

Spray plaster is a ready-mixed finishing plaster applied by airless machine. It goes on in even coats of around 1–2 mm, is flattened with wide blades, and is sanded once dry to a smooth, uniform surface.

Because the material is mixed in the factory and applied by machine, it is consistent from one wall to the next. No variation between mixes, no trowel marks and no changes in density to show through paint.

Why it matters

Suited to modern interiors

Wall-washers, linear lighting, shadow gaps and large expanses of flat matt paint show every ripple and joint. Traditional skim, applied by hand in batches, struggles to meet that standard consistently across a whole house.

Spray plastering, properly prepared and finished, gives a flatter and more even surface. It is specified where walls and ceilings will be seen in strong light.

  • Existing plaster in sound condition
  • Previously painted surfaces, after preparation

Our standard

Preparation and inspection

Preparation

Floors, joinery and glazing protected. Beads fixed true, joints reinforced and the background primed to control suction.

Conditions

Temperature and humidity checked before spraying. We do not apply outside the manufacturer's limits.

Finishing

Each coat flattened with wide blades, then sanded with dust-extracted equipment.

Inspection

Every wall and ceiling checked under raking light, which shows any unevenness, before handover.

Questions

Common questions

How does spray plaster compare with traditional skim?

Both produce a smooth wall. Spray plaster gives a more uniform surface, with consistent density and absorption across large areas, and generally dries faster. It suits large areas and specifications where walls will be inspected closely.

How long does it take to dry?

Most spray finish plasters can be decorated within 12–48 hours, depending on the product, coat thickness, temperature and ventilation. Traditional gypsum skim usually needs several days or more.

Does it need a mist coat?

Many spray plaster systems can be painted directly, without a diluted mist coat. Requirements vary by product, and a primer is usually recommended before wallcoverings. We confirm the decorating requirements for the system used on your project.

Can it go over existing plaster or paint?

Yes, provided the surface is sound. Loose or hollow plaster is repaired first, and painted surfaces are prepared and primed. Photographs of the existing surface usually tell us enough to price; where they do not, we arrange a visit.

Do you work in occupied homes?

Yes. Spraying needs thorough masking, which we carry out before any work starts. The plaster is ready-mixed, so there is no mixing on site, and sanding is done with dust extraction.
